  1. Milwaukee, 1994

    Steve’s Bicycle Center

My experience as a professional bicycle mechanic began in 1994 at the age of 14 at Steve’s Bicycle Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I was a BMX brat who pestered Dean and Sam for a job until one day they gave me a chance and hired me! I wrenched for them and another shop called Cool Bikes through my high school years.

  2. Madison

    Williamson Bicycle Works

Then I moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where I was deeply immersed in cycling culture. The fixed gear scene was blowing up, lugged Italian race bikes were the hot ticket, and handcrafted frames from the likes of Johnnycycles, Soulcraft, and Rivendell graced my workstand at Williamson Bicycle Works.

  3. La Crosse, 2004–2018

    Blue Heron Bicycle Works

I later moved west to La Crosse, Wisconsin, to be closer to nature and the Big Muddy, where I established Blue Heron Bicycle Works in 2004. After 14 rewarding years of repairing, selling, and renting bikes, I decided to sell the shop, now known as Coulee Bicycle Company.

  4. Santa Fe

    Bicycle Technologies International

Afterwards, my partner and I wanted a change of scenery and a longer riding season, so we decided to move to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where I worked for Bicycle Technologies International, a wholesale bicycle distributor, as a Suspension Technician and Wheel Builder.

  5. Tucson

    Rat Race Wheels

From there, we moved to Tucson, Arizona, where I owned Rat Race Wheels, a small online wheel-building business specializing in esoteric mountain, gravel, and road wheels. My partner and I love the desert Southwest and will revisit often, but we were ultimately called to the stellar singletrack and gravel roads of Missoula, MT.

  6. Missoula

    Golden Goat Cycles

So here I am, excited to be back in a tiny, repair-focused shop similar in size to where it all began in 1994. Missoula is also an excellent city to travel by bike. I’m fortunate these days to be able to ride safely to work every day, get a mountain ride in before work, or grind some gravel miles after work. Every day is a bike day, and I’m honored to put all my years of bicycle knowledge to work repairing your bike or building your next dream wheelset!

Kindness. Integrity. Experience.

I hope to meet you (and your bike) soon :)
